Brass conducts heat well and suits everyday materials such as PLA and PETG, but it wears quickly with abrasive filaments. Hardened steel resists that wear, so choose it for carbon fibre, glass fibre or glow-in-the-dark filament. It conducts heat less well, so you may need to raise your print temperature slightly.

Smooth PEI leaves a glossy underside and works well with PLA. Textured PEI leaves a matte finish and is more forgiving of small levelling errors. PETG can bond very strongly to smooth PEI, so many people use a glue stick there as a release layer.
